Roar by Katy Perry, an overview of the music video

by: Chichi Maduka

So, I finally watched the music video of the hit song, ‘Roar’ by Katy Perry currently making the airwaves.  First, I have to say that the first time I listened to that song, I totally fell in love with it that I played it over and over again. As I listened to it, I was creating a picture of what the music video would look like and when I finally watched the video few days ago, what I saw wasn’t much different from what I imagined.

The music video had a touch of creativity in terms of wardrobe, setting and theme. My only problem with it was Katy Perry who I thought should have put in more energy  and be more fierce in the video going by the lyrics of the song. She kinda made it a fun (you know the ‘jungle book’ kind of fun) video which I think didn’t perfectly drive home the message in the song.

Apart from these observations, the video was good but it could have been better. My head did not ‘swell’ as I expected it to. Lol. My! I pictured and expected a very fierce video with that setting and wardrobe concepts, although, the scene below kinda had that fierce vibes I was looking for. Nevertheless, this does not take away the fact that ‘roar’ was a song well ‘cooked’.

Building Your Personal Brand Through What you Wear

 by: Chichi Maduka

Fashion has grown all over the world in terms of clothing styles, patterns, shapes, sizes, colours, and concepts. It has grown even to a point that fashion as a word may not have the item ‘clothe’ attached to it in the near future; yes, some people now go naked in the name of fashion.

It should be known that in fashion, there are rules, principles, and guidelines to what to wear, how to wear, where to wear, and who is made to wear. While some people posses the natural ability to dress in the most appropriate manner, others do not and this is the reason we have consultants in fashion known as image consultants, fashion consultants or style consultants. These individuals are responsible for helping their clients make choices in terms of clothing styles appropriate for various social situations, including personal and business settings. They often also offer related services such as closet organization, colour and style advice, and shopping tips (they also shop for their clients).

The expertise of fashion consultants is not restricted to clothing as they often help clients to choose flattering hair styles, makeup, jewelry, facial hair grooming, and eye wear choices as well. They may try to enhance a client’s self-esteem by helping him or her feel both comfortable and confident in his or her clothing. They also help their clients to enhance their professional image; a function which they can be hired by companies to educate the employees on proper professional dressing and behaviour.

Image is a big deal in fashion because like the saying goes “you are addressed the way you dress.” One cannot dress like a mad person and expect to be taken seriously. The way you dress can ‘command’ respect for you. There are elements of style everywhere and in everything- our homes, offices, businesses, clothing, etc. Style in fashion is very necessary because it is that feature in fashion that projects the wearer. I say style is simply the standing out factor in your dressing.

When you dress and put into consideration the style and your image, you are basically building your personal image and dressing to success.

Befenchy for Ice Magazine’s Rock and Rave Fashion TV Launch

Befenchy House of Style is partnering and working with Ice magazine, a magazine publication by Brand World Media, Lagos, Nigeria on the launch of its Fashion TV show - Rock and Rave Fashion TV. Rock and Rave Fashion TV aims to start an African version of Fashion TV as there are so many fashion events but no platform to showcase such events.

According to the COO of Brand World Media and Publisher of Ice Magazine, Clara Okoro, she has a background in production and so decided to start up a fashion channel to cover mainly African fashion activities on Cable TV. This is a call for designers, established and upcoming to tap from this rare opportunity to showcase their garments to the world.

Rock and Rave Reality Fashion TV Launch promises to be a classic show, coming from Ice Magazine/Brand World Media and with yours truly, Befenchy House of Style offering Fashion (brand) consulting services for the project, it is simply going to be ground-breaking.

The launching of this project will be taking place on the 1st of December, 2013 at Bespoke Events Centre, Lekki, Lagos and will have in attendance distinguished personalities in fashion/style, beauty, corporate world, media, art, and entertainment.

Between Kim Kardashian’s Brunette and Blonde Looks.

by:  Chichi Maduka

Kim Kardashian decided to have a makeover after delivering her baby girl, North (aka Nori). Contrary to her dark hair, she was spotted recently (with her baby) in a blonde hair. I have always known Kim to be a style icon and she definitely was showing it and doing what she knows how to do best with this new look. Not that she hasn’t been seen with blonde hair before but this came after the delivery of her much talked about baby Nori.

Kim K's old blonde look

Kim K's old blonde look. I think this is a better look. Perhaps she should be getting the blonde look with a wig or isn't that a wig?

Nevertheless, as much as her new look is OK, I think Kim looks better as a brunette. Her dark hair accentuates her beauty more than the blonde hair. Take a look and compare.

What do you think? Between Kim K’s dark hair and blonde hair, which do you prefer?

Rita Dominic’s Look to Nigeria Entertainment Awards (NEA)

by:  Chichi Maduka

The Nigeria Entertainment Awards (NEA) took place in New York on the 1st of September. Rita Dominic who was one of the award recipients at the event graced the occasion in this stylish cape-gown ensemble, an outfit she wore so well with the right attitude and right hairdo.

Rita is fondly called the Queen of Zamunda and I must say that this outfit says nothing but “hail the queen of Zamunda!”. Lovely! and I expect Rita to come out in more unique and stylish wears as  I’m tired of seeing her in the ‘skimpies’ and ‘show legs’. :-) Yes, you all know that Befenchy is all about style, uniqueness, image, and branding.

Marissa Mayer and Toni Braxton, a tale of two different brands

by: Chichi Maduka

Marissa Mayer is the CEO of Yahoo. She recently appeared in Vogue magazine and her appearance created controversies among different people form different facets of life. The controversy was about the pose she struck in the magazine. Some people felt that as a CEO, she shouldn't have taken that kind of pose while others felt that she can express herself however she likes  and that even as a CEO she can still express her beauty. Take a look at the pix below.

Looking at this pix, first, the styling was good for a CEO. Secondly, the pose is OK only if she was a model. Lol. If I didn't know who Merissa Mayer was and I saw this pix, the thing that would come to my mind will be 'wow! what a good pose to showcase an outfit' while the last thing that will come to my mind will be to think that she is a CEO of a corporate organisation. The thing is that this pose is not for a personality like this unless there's something she wants to achieve with it, like to strike a modelling deal. :-) Above all I don't even think it is appropriate to strike this kind of pose dressed up this way. Shoots should be made realistic enough so that your audience can connect with it. Creativity in shoots is very important but when too much research is made for it, it usually does not work. Lol. Well, I leave you all to say what you think about this.

The second thing we will be looking into in this article is about Toni Braxton's wardrobe malfunction on stage. Yes, Toni recently got her butt exposed to the glare of her fans while performing on stage. Let's face it, Toni Braxton was barely wearing a clothe! Ok, let's just imagine she was in one. The clothe she was wearing slipped off her body from behind exposing her asset and you know the 'stunt' they always pull when this kind of thing happens to show us how 'divalicious' they are (I love entertainers! Lol), she continued singing until some guy on stage with her had to help her with his jacket to cover herself up.

I know she is in the entertainment industry where 'anything goes'. I know that costumes are worn during performances, but I also know that there are costumes and there are costumes and that some people go to an outrageous length to get noticed.

Ladies think they look sexy exposing their goodies but let's face it, this habit never says anything good about a person. Take a look at this old picture of Toni Braxton and see what I'm talking about.

Sometimes, I just wonder that, she is a great artiste, why would she be exposing her body to make a statement? but hey, I would only develop headache if I continue wondering.

Genevieve Nnaji in style; a style inspiration

by: Chichi Maduka

Check out this pix of the Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji (left in the pix) I thought I should share with you all. In the pix, she is wearing royal blue and white traditional attire. The colour combination of her outfit is not just what I love so much about this outfit but also the way the outfit was styled. The lady with her in the pix is wearing the same outfit but in the usual way in which ladies wear the skirt and blouse traditional ensemble but Genevieve came out in this outfit in the unusual style which is very unique and so gorgeously combined with a gold pump. Ladies tucking in a blouse into a skirt is usually seen with the non-traditional outfits/materials and doing that with a traditional one is uncommon. I guess not many thought that this styling with traditional attire could come out this fabulous.

I must give it to Genevieve for this style. This is definitely a style inspiration and a new addition to 2013 fashion trends but caution must be applied as this style will not go well with ladies with big tummies. :-) Take a look.
